Your team lives in Slack. Your project tracking lives in Jira. The gap between them is where things fall through the cracks.

Bugs get discussed in #engineering and never filed. Feature requests come up in #customer-success and stay buried in a thread. Architecture decisions made in a Slack conversation don’t make it into the relevant ticket.

Here are the three ways teams connect Slack to Jira - from the native integration to fully autonomous ticket creation - and when each one makes sense.

Option 1: The Native Jira for Slack App (Manual)

Atlassian makes a free Slack integration called Jira for Slack (find it in the Slack App Directory or the Atlassian Marketplace).

What it does:

  • Create a Jira issue directly from any Slack message using the message action menu (click the ”…” on a message > “Create Jira issue”)
  • Pre-populates the issue title with the message text
  • Lets you set the project, issue type, and other fields from a form in Slack
  • Sends notifications to Slack channels when Jira issues are created, updated, or transitioned
  • Subscribe a Slack channel to get updates from a specific Jira project or filter

How to set it up:

  1. Go to the Slack App Directory and search for “Jira”
  2. Install the Jira Cloud app
  3. Connect to your Jira instance and authenticate
  4. Run /jira connect in Slack to link a channel to a project

The limitation:

This is entirely manual. Creating a ticket from a Slack message requires someone to:

  • See the message
  • Decide it should be a ticket
  • Click through the creation flow
  • Fill in the fields

In a high-volume Slack workspace, most action items don’t get this treatment. The integration removes friction, but it doesn’t remove the human trigger requirement.

Best for: Teams that want the option to create Jira tickets from Slack without leaving the app, and are disciplined about using the message action consistently.

Option 2: Rule-Based Automations (Zapier, Make, n8n)

For teams that want to automate the Slack-to-Jira flow without relying on someone clicking a button, Zapier and Make (formerly Integromat) are the standard tools.

Common workflows:

  • When a user reacts to a message with a specific emoji (e.g., 🎫), create a Jira ticket with the message text
  • When a message is posted to a specific channel (e.g., #bugs), create a Jira bug with the message as the description
  • When someone posts a message with a specific keyword or format (e.g., [BUG]), trigger ticket creation

How to set up a Zapier Slack-to-Jira workflow:

  1. Create a new Zap with “Slack” as the trigger app
  2. Choose the trigger event: “New Message Posted to Channel” or “New Reaction Added to Message”
  3. Add conditions if needed (specific channel, specific emoji, keyword filter)
  4. Add Jira as the action app
  5. Choose “Create Issue” as the action
  6. Map the Slack message fields to Jira fields (message text to summary, channel to label, etc.)

The limitation:

Rule-based automations solve the “someone has to click” problem, but they introduce a different one: trigger dependency.

If the trigger is an emoji react, tickets only get created when someone reacts with that emoji. If the trigger is a keyword format, tickets only get created when someone uses that format. Most Slack conversations don’t use consistent formats, and most messages scroll by without emoji reactions.

The result: rule-based automations capture a subset of what should be tracked - the messages that fit the rule - and miss everything else.

Best for: Teams with predictable, high-volume sources of ticket candidates (e.g., a dedicated #bugs channel where every message should become a ticket).

Option 3: Autonomous AI Agent (No Trigger Required)

The third approach doesn’t require a trigger. An AI agent monitors your Slack channels continuously, reads conversations in context, and proposes tickets based on what it understands - without anyone having to react with an emoji or use a specific format.

How it works with Telos:

  1. Telos connects to your Slack workspace and the channels you designate

The batch review model:

Rather than creating tickets without oversight, the autonomous approach surfaces proposed actions for human review. The PM doesn’t do the work of creating each ticket; they review a proposed batch and approve. This takes 3-5 minutes and gives you control over what enters the backlog.

Best for: Teams that want the backlog to accurately reflect what’s happening in Slack without requiring consistent emoji reactions or message formats.

Which One Should You Use?

Start with the native Jira for Slack app. It’s free, it takes 5 minutes to set up, and it’s a useful fallback for ad-hoc ticket creation.

If you have a specific, high-volume channel where most messages should become tickets (like a dedicated customer feedback channel), add a Zapier automation for that channel specifically.

For the rest - the bugs discussed in planning meetings, the feature requests surfaced in #customer-success, the architecture decisions buried in threads - you need something that reads the conversation, not just the trigger.
